about

Originally on 12 4 12, a never-completed album from 2010, I have other versions of this song at various stages of production on various hard drives, but still enjoy this hastily recorded original rendition.

lyrics

You came into my room
and lay your head upon my chest
I put my arm over you
and fell into the deepest rest

I dreamt of walking in the woods
You and me, buzzing bees and summer buds
and by the old fort walls we lay down
between blades of grass and the ghosts of the battle ground

And then, high off on the hill
Appeared a silhouette, I can see it still
The outline of your father, gun on shoulder
On the other side I felt my skin get colder

I'm a shade too dark for his daughter
He promised me a bullet if I laid a hand upon her
But the bayou pulled him under late last year
Leaving all he owned to the one that he held so dear

Then, back at the Plantation
I woke up in my own room
How was I to know I wasn't dreaming?
Wrapped up in linen and you
